Due to legal challenges, StudentAid.gov has stopped taking applications for Federal Student Loan Debt Relief. The Department of Education is appealing the cases and holding onto the applications previously submitted.

While the application is no longer active, the link below can still be utilized for updates from the Department of Education.

As of 10/17/2022:

The Federal Student Loan Debt Relief Application is now available. The application launched on October 17th, 2022 and appears to be open until December 31, 2023. Up to $10,000 in federal student loan debt for qualifying recipients and $20,000 for qualifying Pell Grant recipients will be forgiven.

If your 2020 OR 2021 tax filing status was single or married filing separately with an income of less than $125,000, you should qualify for forgiveness.

If your 2020 OR 2021 tax filing status was married filing jointly, head of household, or qualifying widower with an income of less than $250,000, you should qualify for forgiveness.

It is up to you if you would like to apply now or wait to make sure the kinks in the system are ironed out before you apply.

To fill out the Debt Relief Application visit https://studentaid.gov/debt-relief/application.

You can also sign up to receive emails regarding updates on the loan forgiveness program. Go to https://www.ed.gov/subscriptions, enter your email address, and check the first box that says “NEW!! Federal Student Loan Borrower Updates”.
